SAN DIEGO, Calif., March 12, 2014 – Thursday March 13, 2014 is World Kidney Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness for kidney disease, prevention and treatment. About one in ten people have kidney disease, and many don’t even know it. Left untreated, kidney function can deteriorate leading to kidney failure which then requires dialysis and/or transplant.
In the U.S. alone, nearly 100,000 people are on the waiting list for a kidney transplant, that includes nearly 18,000 in California. While organ donation rates are increasing, the need for kidney transplants continues to grow at a rate that there will never be enough kidneys recovered from deceased donors. Therefore, the only way to possibly meet the growing need for kidney transplants is to increase living donation.
Living Donation California seeks to educate people about living kidney donation and encourage them to be altruistic kidney donors by referring them to a transplant center in California. Altruistic donors may be matched to single recipients, or they could play a key role in “kidney chains” which link a series of incompatible pairs of donors and recipients who are incompatible with each other. The longest kidney chain to date involved 30 living donors and their recipients. Max Zapata, of Clovis, started a kidney chain as an altruistic living kidney donor. Watch his story here.
