Living Donation California is authorized by SB 1395, the “Altruistic Living Donor Registry Act of 2010.”
This legislation, which was authored by Sen. Elaine Alquist, championed by both Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the late Apple founder and liver transplant recipient Steve Jobs, authorized “California organ procurement organizations…to establish a not-for-profit entity…designed to promote and assist live kidney donations, including paired exchanges and non-directed donations.”
Beginning in May 2011, Donate Life California led a working group comprised of representatives of 12 California kidney transplant programs and the state’s four organ procurement organizations to develop an information and referral service that would meet the goals of SB 1395. The service, formally named Living Donation California, launched in May 2013.
